Happy Valentine's Day - Rabbits need Rabbits!

(February 14, 2018)

Happy Valentines Day!

Rabbits are naturally sociable animals usually preferring to be in the company of other rabbits. It is becoming widely accepted by welfare organisations that pet rabbits ideally should have a companion of their own kind for their welfare to be best met (there are of course occasional exceptions to this rule). We would urge anyone considering taking on rabbits as pets to view them as an animal that should wherever possible be kept in at least pairs.

As territorial animals it is very important that any rabbit introductions are undertaken very carefully. It is recommended that all rabbits should be neutered prior to bonding (regardless of the combination of sexes). As a general rule a male/female mixed pairing is considered the most trouble free bond and is generally recommended. However, other neutered pairings, and groups are also possible (we keep our special needs sanctuary bunnies here often in happily bonded compatible neutered groups).

This page from the from the The Rabbit Welfare Association and Fund provides an excellent summary of the basics: http://rabbitwelfare.co.uk/rabbit-care-advice/bonding-rabbits/
