Guinea pigs (cavia aperea porcellus) are also frequently called cavies. Born without a tail, they are rodents that can have many different coat types and colours (see guinea pig breeds). Guinea pigs make fantastic pets, although they can be nervous at first if they are treated with love and care they are easy to handle and rarely bite. Guinea pigs are somewhat unagile in comparison to other rodents. However, despite their stumpy legs and stocky bodies they are able to run relatively fast. This is a very important ability for wild guinea pigs that are prey to many.
One of the most charming traits of guinea pigs is their very varied vocabulary which they use for communication. This can range from high pitched squeals and squeaks to low purrs and even grunts. There is nothing more welcoming than a chorus of excited guinea pigs greeting you on your return.
