We hope you enjoy our guinea pig pages covering:
Breeding
The gestation period of the guinea pig (60-72 days) is extremely long for an animal of its size, and in fact is a similar length to a dog or cat. The result is that guinea pigs are very mature at birth. A new born guinea pig has open eyes, is fully furred and possesses teeth making it a perfect miniature version of an adult guinea pig. The guinea pig baby can amazingly been seen tucking into adult guinea pig food a couple of hours after birth!
Around 48 hours before the birth of the baby guinea pigs hormones will cause a pelvic bone called the pubic symphysis to separate, this is essential for a safe delivery. If a female guinea pig has not had a first litter before around 12 months of age it can be extremely dangerous to attempt to breed from her. These pelvic bones may be fused preventing a successful delivery and potentially ending in tragedy. Please be aware of this if you are considering breeding from your guinea pig and please do not let unwanted pregnancies occur by housing un-neutered mixed sexed guinea pigs together.
If you are considering breeding from your guinea pig or your guinea pig has an unplanned pregnancy I couldn’t recommend the following inexpensive book more.‘The Sex Life Of Guinea Pigs’ by Peter Gurney. All Peter Gurney’s guinea pig books are brilliant. This one is full of fantastic photos and really easy to read, it explains all the important aspects of guinea pig breeding in a friendly sensitive way.
